What is service learning?

Service learning is when you work or participate for a company for ex: Big Brothers and Sister, Easter Seal, and assist in providing services for the company to consumers.  Service learning provides hands on experiences and helps you understand how the company operates and what the job consists of when it comes to helping people.  You as a volunteer will help provide a learning skill that will help consumers.  Service learning is an excellent way to boost your resume when looking for employment.  This is a great tool to help people learn different companies and their services they provide.

What are your expectations along with any apprehension you have about this project?

I have always carried high expectations for myself to strive for perfection or as close as you can get it.  I don’t think I have any concern for this project.  I believe that communication is always the best answer to any solution.  To communicate as a team member and everyone participate and manage their part the project will be a success. A project only fails when a person avoid doing their part and cut off communication.

What skills will transfer over to your current or future career?

The skills I think will carry over to my future career will be team building and organizational skills.  These are two areas I believe you can never stop growing in, you can’t always choose who is on your team but, you can learn how to be a leader and be a positive person and help others to succeed as well.  Organizational skills are one of my strong points, to be given a task along with instructions and you are to make a finish product is a great challenge to me.  I think you have to use your mind on how you will complete the project and end up victorious.  That’s where my leadership skills will come in handy.  It’s about the end of the day; you will never finish everything on your list.  But, if you complete some things on the list you were lucky until tomorrow.

What is the role of constructive criticism in the work place?

The role of constructive criticism in the workplace is to make sure everyone understand the responsibility of their jobs and positions. Constructive criticism is to be used to inform an employee on things that could be done differently to make quotas or to complete a task. It shouldn’t be used to make an employee feel incompetent.

When is a time you had to either provide or receive constructive criticism? What was the situation? What was the outcome? What would you do differently?

I had received constructive criticism when I had my first audit for student files and attendance records with Genesee Intermediate School District. I thought it was the worst day of my life, and I had never done an audit before. When I sat down to discuss what I needed to do in order to receive good comments I found the auditors to use discretion when they commented on recommendations to improve on yearly audits.

The first thing I wanted to know was the expectation of what’s needed from me on behalf of the school. I had to get a clear understanding of what they will be looking for in order to master one of my stipulations as Business Manager. Of course, they gave me a deadline date to have the information that was needed to close out the final audit report and it made me aware of my requirements for future audits with them.

I would not change anything because, it was a learning experience for me and to become good in my field you have to start somewhere even if you flop for the first time. I appreciate the constructive criticism they gave and I appreciate the diplomacy they used to help me understand what they were looking for in future audits. I did get it right with time and my audits became perfect, the goal I had set for myself was accomplished.

Why should I hire you (skill set)?

I’m committed to accomplishing goals through strong leadership skills.  If your company is looking for a highly optimistic person and has based their success on team building then I am the person for the job. I surely know my abilities can make me stand apart from the rest of the candidates. Through hard work and commitment there should be no reason why I cannot achieve the goals of the company. Also, I can adjust to any situation and can work with my fellow colleagues and make this a great opportunity to learn from others which will help me to expand my knowledge. Lastly, the best thing is to have a collaborated working environment for employees to be more productive.

How has your education prepared you for your career?

I learned from firsthand experiences to grow within any company I needed to earn my degree.  I realize the power this degree would have; along with my work experience to increase my chances of becoming a highly qualified candidate in the field of management. The economy is becoming increasingly worst when it comes to employment.  So, I knew this was something I needed to help advance me within my career and to have a stable promising job within our economy.  Making this choice of earning my degree has already started to change my way of thinking; and have shown me through hard work and studying it would increase my chances of success within my life.

Have you ever had a conflict with a boss or professor?

Yes I did and it was because I felt he was not committed to his job as a leader.  I found myself doing things to help him shine as my boss and he was taking advantage of the situation. He didn’t appreciate my loyalty to the job and the employees.  This went on for over a year maybe two, I found myself stressed all the time when I came home from work.  I decided I needed to address the situation and give dates and times of incidents where I felt he was not being committed to his employees.  After, two hours of discussing my concerns with him we came to a mutual agreement of helping each other not one person having an unlimited work load to bear alone.

Are you a team player?

Yes, the job I worked dealt with audits, reports and tons of paper work including being over different departments.  I had an office staff of 4 people and in our weekly meeting we established grounds rules of how we wanted to accomplish our goals by helping each other and working together.  Each had individual jobs, but when it came to reports and audits they would help each other to accomplish the requirements needed.  Even though I was the business manager, my title did not stop me from chiming in to help my staff accomplish their goals as well.   Everyone respected each other as a person which made the working environment less stressful.

Margie’s Introduction

I am currently pursuing a degree in Business Administration. With this degree, I am looking for better opportunities in the business industry and to strengthen my management skills with a degree that will open the door for advancement. I have 11 years of experience in management, 8 years being the Director of Administration with a promotion to Business Manager of 3 years in a charter school. Also, managing a successful staff of 25 employees within the different departments from clerical staff in the business office, kitchen staff, lunchroom monitors, janitorial staff and security staff as well.
In addition, I was also responsible for reports to the State of Michigan entering data for student and teacher’s records, along with shot records to the Genesee County Health Department for audits. I was also responsible for the audits of files and records for student and teachers, lunch program data for students and audit information to the Genesee Intermediate School District. I feel that I have accomplished goals within these area, but, seeking higher expectations for myself to become more marketable to employers and not surrounding a school setting.
I considered myself to be a team player and work well others to accomplish the goals set by the company and myself. In order to be a valuable employee you have to set the tone of the company through great representation so, that the employees would strive for excellence within themselves. Through hard work, goals and equality to employees I could be a positive role replica within your company. Even though, I have strict expectations for myself I feel that I could be a positive force within your company that can be the key to a successful company and productive employees.
Meeting daily quotas and being organized is just a few accomplishments I have set for myself, but, is willing to be a person that is open to change and could have the employees to strive for the same goals. I feel that technical communication is important because in my career it will cut down on paper usage and the cost of maintenance for copiers. It can also enhance different areas like, orientation and training purposes. This could be a lower cost to many companies and will be less time consuming dealing pricing.
